Executive Summary
Our Understanding of Your Goals
You may have a range of integration needs, such as:
- Rapid deployment of integration to support an immediate departmental project to counter a competitive business threat
- Linking of a worldwide call center rollout to a range of local and central support systems to improve customer satisfaction
- Adopting a new application package that needs to be connected to other systems
- Introducing supply chain management to connect all parts of the value chain
- Creating a blueprint for an enterprise-wide integration platform to support a long-term strategic initiative
These diverse needs imply a wide spectrum of integration requirements from straightforward application connectivity to full business process integration and include extending solutions beyond the traditional boundaries of the enterprise. Application connectivity addresses the requirements for connecting various applications, allowing information to be shared and used across the heterogeneous application systems typically found in the enterprise. Business process integration allows your business to control and coordinate activities across various process constituents, people and applications, internal and external to the enterprise, in ways that fully and efficiently implement defined business processes.
Our Approach to Meeting Your Goals
IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server, the IBM business integration solution for process integration, workforce management, and enterprise application connectivity, enables you to:

Solution Overview
WebSphere Business Integration Toolset provides comprehensive tooling to generate the artifacts required for an enterprise integration solution (including, process collaborations, workflows, message flows, and business objects). The toolset specifically provides the tools for the artifacts of the WebSphere ICS.
- The WebSphere Business Integration overall architecture enables projects to be designed and implemented based on the concept of separation of function:
- Core business application logic remains in the packaged and legacy applications that are being integrated
- Logic specific to routing and transformation is contained in an application connectivity layer
- Cross-application business process logic is contained in the process integration layer
- This means that WebSphere Business Integration Server is particularly suited for solving integration problems through incremental implementation. The advanced architecture gives you the opportunity to reuse packaged application business logic and in-house application logic, as well as any process routines previously built to implement middleware logic.
WebSphere Business Integration Server is an offering of three mature products packaged and licensed for use as a single solution:
- WebSphere InterChange Server (ICS)
- WebSphere MQ Workflow
- WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker
WebSphere Business Integration Toolset, WebSphere MQ, DB2 Universal Database, and selected WebSphere Business Integration Adapters are also included for use with these products.
Business integration software helps you rapidly adapt and deploy flexible business processes. With a WebSphere Business Integration solution, you have the IT agility to modify and improve business processes in response to competitive pressures, market changes, and economic fluctuations. This can contribute to reduced costs and an increased return on investment, which are welcome benefits in a tough economic climate.
Why IBM?
Years ago, IBM moved data access and transaction-processing functions out of applications and into data management and transaction-processing software. Similarly, IBM business integration software moves integration and business-process functions out of applications to enable you to have a more responsive, cost-effective business infrastructure. IBM supports the integration approach that ’s right for you with business integration software and a framework that includes common services among the various integration approaches. These common services help you cut integration costs and ease the integration of heterogeneous systems. IBM’s extensive experience in using service-oriented approaches in business integration software makes your systems more flexible and adaptable.
Today IBM offers a business integration portfolio that can address virtually all of your integration needs. A family of business integration offerings that allow you to start with a simple, cost-effective solution —and then grow and integrate that solution into a comprehensive enterprise architecture as your needs dictate. Because IBM gives you an open, standard-based integration portfolio that works well in a heterogeneous environment, you can benefit from using IBM as a single business integration software vendor. IBM offerings use common standards and architectures and share code.
