WebSphere Architect


This Candidate is a Consulting IT Specialist at IBM’s Pan-EMEA software services practice. The practice is focused to helping clients successfully deploy IBM software technology, primarily J2EE and WebSphere-based packages, such as WebSphere Portal and Application Server. Separate areas of interest include Tivoli monitoring and security products as they are strongly connected to WebSphere middleware. His typical engagements are mostly short time and highly demanding consulting projects, requiring leadership skills and deep technical experience alike. Building confidence and establishing a trustworthy relationship with various key stakeholders ranging from top executives to developers is one of his most important objectives. While many engagements last several weeks, this candidate has also a proven track of record leading long-term engagements designing and implementing IT architectures for various highly visible clients across EMEA. AssignmentMajor GSM provider, Czech Republic – Systems integration for the client’s corporate Portal for internal users was created; based on WebSphere Portal, which was integrated with other existing J2EE applications. Architecture for messaging layer with WebSphere MQ Platform, WebSphere Application Server v5.0 and Message Driven Beans (MDB) was created and implemented.

Assignment• Serono International consultancy – large WebSphere Portal project in Switzerland. This candidates responsibility was performance tuning and WPS scalability. Starting from custom developed portlets, themes, skins he had to improve scalability of every single Portal component. Additional effort was spend tuning infrastructure component, such as the LDAP directory, Databases, WAS connection pooling, JVM thread pools, and JAVA heap analyzing. The solution is in production since January 2005.

Assignment• Fortis Bank Brussels BTT application tuning – Fortis IT department wrote a Business Transformation Toolkit based on a system aimed for branch office services. It was supposed to run in 1200 offices with an average user load above 5000 concurrent users. When this candidate joined the project the current system was not able to handle more than 200 concurrent users on the test environment. The actual target however was to serve 1000 concurrent users. After decomposing the architecture he identified various performance bottle-necks and proposed a new design based on his findings. After supporting the implementation of the new architecture, this candidate also assisted in bringing the solution into production. As of today Fortis Bank has successfully deployed the new solution in most of its branch offices.

AssignmentNOKIA Finland extreme LDAP system – as a part of international team this candidate has participated in a CritSit aimed to tune the LDAP based system designed for provisioning applications in Vodafone US. The system is supposed to run 90 millions operations per 8 hours (3125 per second). His role in the team was to review the application code resulting in a rewrite of many parts of the application within days. The changes were successfully tested and the system was accepted by Vodafone and supposed start in production by October 15th.

AssignmentJyske Bank Denmark web infrastructure project – Head architect and implementation team leader for Web infrastructure in the bank. Project based on WAS 6.0.2 with TAM 5.1 integration based on TAI+. As a part of this solution this candidate implemented a JMX based subsystem for creating configuration objects like application servers, clusters and others based on full traffic automation. He designed all security and monitoring components for Tivoli which he also proposed as an alphaWorks technology aimed for distributed systems management based on various standards.

Assignment• Vodacom South Africa – WebSphere Portal based development in order to create a completely new customer care system on top of the WebSphere Portal framework. This candidate used the Asynchronous Beans framework together with Distributed Map object cache to accommodate long running call to backend systems. This design led to much improved page refresh times which turned out to be the key success factor for the implementation team. This candidate published an article on Developer Works based on this approach.
